Welcome back to the show. Today we’re celebrating a milestone: the 20th anniversary of Steve Jobs’s legendary Stanford commencement address—now available in higher definition. As Apple CEO Tim Cook reminded us, “It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since Steve told Stanford graduates to stay hungry and stay foolish.” Thanks to The Steve Jobs Archive, you can now watch an enhanced video of that unforgettable speech.
Jobs prepared obsessively, even emailing himself drafts in the weeks before June 12, 2005. In his remarks he shared timeless wisdom: “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards,” and perhaps most strikingly, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” He also reflected on life’s daily choices: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”
He closed with a reminder that dropping out of college—“one of the best decisions I ever made”—led him to that fateful calligraphy course that gave the Mac its iconic fonts. Catch the restored speech online and rediscover the power of Jobs’s words.
