Welcome to Tech Reality Check. I’m your host, and today we’re tackling why tech billionaires’ plans for space colonies and AI gods are outright delusional. As science journalist Adam Becker warns, these leaders spin “ludicrously implausible power fantasies.” Take Elon Musk’s vow to put “a million people on Mars by 2050” and call it humanity’s “lifeboat for civilization.” In reality, Mars is too hostile—low gravity, lethal radiation, toxic soil—and any colony would depend entirely on billionaire-owned rockets. Meanwhile, AI hype promises superintelligence in four years that will halve product prices every two years or risk destroying humanity. Yet this “godlike AI” is pure science fiction, built on marketing myths, not evidence. Even Jeff Bezos’s dream of a trillion people in orbital cities larger than Manhattan is logistically impossible. These fantasies distract from urgent issues here on Earth. The future is ours to build, not theirs to dictate.
