Hello and welcome to Well Informed. Today we ask: is the “manopause” real? If it is, say scientists, “it is nothing like the menopause.” Women experience a sudden drop in oestrogen that brings “hot flushes, insomnia, joint pains, loss of libido” and infertility years before the end of life. Men, by contrast, see testosterone fall only by about 1% a year after age 30. That gradual decline rarely produces a clear syndrome. Studies of testosterone replacement show benefits only in men with severely low levels, and carry risks of heart problems and prostate issues. Most middle-aged men’s aches, fatigue or mood changes are often chalked up to stress, diet or sleep, not a hormonal cliff. So while the term “manopause” makes headlines, the evidence suggests there’s no male equivalent of menopause—just the slow passage of time.
