Decluttering Before a Move: How to Spark Joy and Ease the Transition

Welcome to today’s episode. “Moving sucks,” as Jay Peters reminds us, but he’s found that decluttering can make the process a lot smoother. When he and his wife downsized from a one-bedroom to a studio in Seattle, they turned to Marie Kondo’s advice—keeping only what “spark[s] joy.” Starting small, they tackled clothes first, saving precious gadgets and games for later. Peters admits that once you decide what to remove, finding a place to donate or sell it can be its own challenge. He also shares some regrets: tossing high school yearbooks and tattered Harry Potter books that held sentimental value, and even giving away old game consoles he now wishes he’d kept. Yet overall, he “doesn’t miss the vast majority” of items he’s decluttered. That first big purge made their cross-state move from Seattle to Portland far easier. If you’re facing a move, remember: decluttering is a skill, and once you’ve practiced it, the next move will be just a bit less painful.
