Decoding Tattoos and Misconceptions: The Truth Behind Gang Symbols and Identity

Hello and welcome to today’s episode. President Trump recently claimed that Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s knuckle tattoos prove he’s a member of MS-13. In a Truth Social post, the president superimposed the letters M-S-1-3 above symbols like a marijuana leaf and a skull, insisting they spelled out the gang’s name. But photos shared by Mr. Abrego Garcia’s wife show no such letters on his hands. Tattoo experts and gang specialists say the ink on his knuckles—common images like a cross and a smiley face—is entirely unremarkable. “MS-13 does not equivocate; they don’t leave any ambiguity when it comes to their tattoos,” says anthropologist Jorja Leap of UCLA. José Miguel Cruz of Florida International University adds, “We cannot infer that he’s MS-13 just because of those tattoos.” Law enforcement officials agree that tattoos alone aren’t definitive proof of gang membership. That context helped secure a Supreme Court order for Mr. Abrego Garcia’s release from El Salvador, where he was mistakenly deported. Thanks for listening.
