Hello and welcome to Art Essentials, the podcast where we help new artists find the right tools to start drawing today. I’m your host, and in this episode we’re rating the best free drawing apps for beginners, inspired by Brad Colbow’s popular review.
First up is Autodesk Sketchbook. As Brad puts it, Sketchbook has a “clean interface” that lets you jump straight into sketching without distraction. Its brush library is surprisingly robust, with everything from pencils to markers.
Next is Krita, which “brings pro-level power” to your tablet or desktop. You get customizable brushes, advanced layer management, and the ability to record your entire painting process.
For those who love comics and light installs, MediBang Paint is a winner. It’s “lightweight, cloud-friendly,” and offers comic-specific tools like speech bubbles and screentones.
Finally, Ibis Paint X shines on mobile. With over 2,500 brushes, stabilizers, and a built-in community feed, it keeps you inspired and connected.
No matter which you choose, each of these apps is completely free, making it easy to dive in and start creating. Until next time, happy drawing!
