Welcome to CBS Sunday Morning. Today we celebrate 40 years of the Air Jordan, the sneaker that changed the game. It all began in 1984, when a young Michael Jordan walked into Nike, then a small Oregon company. Nike designer Peter Moore remembers, “We needed something completely out of the box.” The result was the Air Jordan I, with its bold red and black colorway – a direct challenge to the NBA’s strict uniform rules.
When the league fined Jordan $5,000 each time he laced them up, Nike simply paid the fees, turning an act of rebellion into a legendary marketing move. As Michael Jordan himself said, “I wanted to express who I was on the court.” Over the decades, the Jumpman logo became as recognizable as any corporate emblem, fueling collaborations, streetwear culture, and a global sneaker craze.
Forty years later, the Air Jordan remains a symbol of innovation, style, and the power of believing you can break the rules. Join us as we look back on this iconic journey.
