Welcome to the podcast! Today, we’re diving into Spotify’s latest venture beyond music streaming: its developer tooling side-hustle, Backstage. Launched as an open-source project in 2020, Backstage has gained traction among over 2 million developers across 3,400 organizations, including big names like Airbnb and LinkedIn. It’s designed to streamline internal tools and data into customizable developer portals. As Tyson Singer, Spotify’s head of technology, pointed out, “We discovered that there were a lot of different customer profiles,” highlighting that both large and small companies are benefiting from Backstage.

Spotify is also beginning to monetize this platform with premium plugins like Backstage Insights and the new Spotify Portal, which offers a “Backstage in a box” solution for those needing a managed service. Additionally, they're introducing AiKA, an AI-powered knowledge assistant that's already making waves within Spotify by helping employees access internal information more efficiently—“It kind of sounds simple, but it’s powerful,” Singer noted.

As they continue to innovate, Spotify is focused on ensuring Backstage remains the industry standard for internal developer tools, aiming to avoid the pitfalls they faced with their previous orchestration platform. As Singer stated, “We want to build a healthy business on top of all this.” That’s it for today—stay tuned for more tech insights!
