From Insights to Impact: Mastering the Art of Assertive Leadership

Welcome back to the High Performer Podcast. Today we’re talking about why insights, suggestions, and assertions are very different. Early in my career I’d knock on my manager’s door with mood boards and say, “Leggings sales have been steadily going up,” only to hear, “And? What should we do?” Insights show you’re curious, suggestions list options, but assertions move the needle. An assertion has three parts: a bias toward action, a point of view with conviction, and ownership. As the article says, “Based on my insight of X, I believe Y is true. To go a step further, given X and Y, I think we should do Z. I think it’ll work because A and B. If it doesn’t work, there’s a risk of C happening, and I’ll take care of that by doing D.” You don’t need 100% certainty—just rigorous thinking. Assertions demand yes or no, drive projects forward, and show leadership. So next time you spot an insight, ask yourself: what assertion can I make? Thanks for listening.
