Welcome back to Tech Today. Today we’re talking about Shawn K, a once six-figure metaverse engineer who now DoorDashes for under two hundred dollars a day and lives in a small trailer. Shawn spent years building virtual workspaces for Virbela, a metaverse arm of eXp Realty. He says AI adoption “increased developer productivity three to ten times,” and before long the company “let go a portion of the developers across all the teams.”

Shawn’s been writing on his Substack about what he calls the “great displacement”—the shift toward automation that cost him his career. He admits, “I’m nearing my 900th application, with no signs of a job offer,” and he suspects resumes are being judged by algorithms hunting for AI buzzwords.

Despite owning property that isn’t easy to sell and caring for his disabled mother, he spends hours daily studying AI and building small code projects just to stay competitive. Shawn warns, “I don’t think my story is unique… It’s coming for basically everyone in due time.”
