Harnessing Anxiety: The Surprising Fuel Behind Jensen Huang's Success

Welcome back to Tech Minute. Today we’re talking about Nvidia’s co-founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, and the unusual fuel behind his success. According to biographer Stephen Witt, Huang isn’t driven by sunshine and rainbows but by anxiety and self-doubt. “He’s almost totally driven by negative emotions,” Witt says. “This is his gasoline, [and it’s] what makes him go is this anxiety.”

Despite presiding over a company now valued at more than $3.3 trillion, Huang fears Nvidia could collapse at any moment. Witt adds, “He becomes very uncomfortable and nervous when things are going well.” That fear of disgrace, that possibility of failure at any time, keeps him pushing harder.

It’s a mindset forged early. Huang co-founded Nvidia in 1993, and just a few years later the company nearly shut down. Fast forward to now: Nvidia posted $44.1 billion in revenue last quarter, and Huang ranks as the 16th richest person in the world.

So next time you’re under pressure, remember: even the people at the very top might be driven by fear—and that can be a powerful motivator. Thanks for listening!
