Welcome to Tech Toys Today. Hot Wheels, the nearly 60-year-old brand, just solved a major pain point with its track sets. Recent research found that “less than a third of kids aged 3 to 6 are able to assemble Hot Wheels track sets without help.” “That to us was a really big call to say that we need to approach this in a different manner,” says Roberto Stanichi, executive vice president of Hot Wheels. After almost three years and six prototypes, the new Speed Snap Track System replaces the old slide-in connectors with a simple snap that kids as young as three can manage. “It’s the first time we’ve done this big of an innovation in the track system in over 50 years,” says Katie Buford of Mattel. The modular design cuts setup time by 10 percent and lets fans build endless layouts. With seven straight years of record growth, Hot Wheels is racing ahead—one snap at a time.
