Today we're asking: Is a GoPro a good travel camera? GoPros are tiny—you can slip one into your pocket—and “extremely durable,” built for adventures. They’re waterproof, shockproof, and super simple: with minimal menus you can just point and shoot. But they use an ultra-wide-angle lens, so unless you’re close to your subject everything ends up small in the frame. With a fixed aperture and only 30 cm minimum focus, GoPros “capture everything in the scene in focus,” making it hard to isolate details or take flattering portraits. Low-light performance also suffers from its small sensor, so noise can creep in after sunset. Phones, by contrast, often give you multiple focal lengths and portrait modes. So, is a GoPro right for you? As DPReview puts it, “It depends.” If you need rugged simplicity for adventure, go for it. If you want control, style, and versatility, look elsewhere.
