Welcome to today’s episode! Two years ago, I questioned whether AI would replace human developers entirely, especially after GPT-4 launched. The buzz was that we were heading into a “post-developer” era, where machines would do all the coding. But here’s the reality: despite companies ramping up AI use, humans are still very much in control.
For example, at Google, AI tools might generate 25% of the code, but skilled developers guide, edit, and shape that output — they’re still the true creators. There are startups claiming their AI can replace developers altogether, like Devin, but real-world tests tell a different story. Teams have found that AI often only handles small, simple tasks, and larger projects still require human expertise. In fact, many AI successes depend on human oversight.
So, are we living in a “post-developer” world? Not quite. AI is a powerful tool to augment our work, but it’s not replacing us—yet. If you’re worried about your future as a developer, rest assured: humans remain essential. Thanks for listening!
