Welcome to today’s podcast episode! We have a rather remarkable story out of Japan involving a student and the iconic Mount Fuji. Last week, a 27-year-old Chinese university student found himself stranded after losing his crampons, essential gear that helps climbers navigate icy terrain. At a staggering height of 12,388 feet, he required a helicopter rescue to bring him back to safety.
But here’s where things take a turn. Just a few days later, in a curious twist, he decided to climb Mount Fuji again—this time to retrieve his forgotten phone from the summit. As reported by BBC, his second attempt saw him reach an altitude of 9,842 feet before he experienced altitude sickness, leading to yet another rescue.
The mountain was technically closed for climbing outside its official season, which runs from early July to September, and many of the trails were off-limits. This incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in mountain climbing, especially when safety protocols aren’t followed. Mount Fuji attracts countless climbers each year, but it is essential to respect the climbing guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety. Stay tuned for more stories that highlight the importance of adventure safety!
