Welcome to Engineering Manager Insights. I’m your host, and today we’re talking about a simple but powerful way for leaders to build trust and alignment with their teams: the weekly mind meld. As the article puts it, a mind meld is borrowing from Star Trek—“a telepathic ability possessed by the alien race of Vulcans to share thoughts and feelings with another individual.”
Rather than chasing endless meetings or skip-level chats, you write. Spend no more than 60 minutes crafting a 1,500-word update, hit send on Friday afternoon, and invite everyone in the company to read it. Keep the tone conversational, mix general news with praise and feedback, and focus on one main topic in depth—your “main event”—then follow up with shorter “sideshows” and a wrap-up call to action.
Throughout the week, tag notes on wins, challenges, customer conversations, and upcoming events. On Friday, pull them together: start with a light intro, share one critical insight, shout out achievements, flag what could improve, and close with next steps or recommended resources.
Writing these mind melds scales your voice, archives your thinking, and keeps everyone aligned. Try it this week and see how writing transforms your leadership.
