Hello and welcome to the Daily Brief. I’m your host. Today, we’re diving into Elon Musk’s blistering takedown of former President Trump’s big domestic policy bill. On X, Musk called the massive, pork-filled spending package “a disgusting abomination.” He added that it would “burden the U.S. with crushingly unsustainable debt” and warned, “Congress is making America bankrupt.”
The White House quickly defended the legislation, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt insisting, “This is one big beautiful bill,” regardless of Musk’s stance. Musk’s critique isn’t new: in a recent CBS News interview he quipped, “I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful. But I don’t know if it could be both.”
The proposal would renew expiring tax cuts, scale back clean energy credits, and tighten border enforcement, but the nonpartisan CBO projects it would add $3.8 trillion to the national debt over a decade. With Republicans racing to pass the bill by July 4, the debate over its scope and cost is far from over. Thanks for listening.
