Navigating College Life in 2025: A Freshman's Guide to Building a Future in Tech

Welcome to today's podcast! Let's dive into what I'd do as a college freshman in 2025.

First off, I'd definitely pursue computer science. Despite concerns surrounding AI and LLMs, I believe, "being supported by AI tools is not a substitute for mastery." Mastering computer science is crucial as it builds essential skills like hacking, debugging, and abstract thinking. These skills won't go out of style and will prepare you for a future in tech.

I'd also focus on STEM. It not only teaches you how to reason and think critically, but also takes you "from information to wisdom" after you've mastered foundational concepts. Think of becoming π-shaped—having depth in two areas while being a generalist overall.

Soft skills are another non-negotiable. Clear communication is vital, especially in remote work environments. Management skills are equally important; remember, "influence scales from the bottom." You have more autonomy than you think, even early in your career.

Staying in the U.S. for college is a solid choice. It's still a great launchpad for tech careers, offering valuable connections and community. Be proactive and collaborative—don’t just sit in lectures.

Lastly, play the long game. In tech, aim for depth and avoid chasing fleeting trends. Remember, “tech rewards leverage, not shortcuts.” Build momentum by stacking useful skills and relationships throughout your journey.
