Hello, and welcome to Economic Brief. Today, we’re looking at fresh data from China that shows how the U.S.-China trade war is reshaping global supply chains. According to Chinese government figures for April, “exports from China jumped last month,” but that surge is not coming from the United States. After President Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 145 percent and China retaliated with levies of 125 percent on American products, Chinese shipments to the U.S. “plunged by 21 percent” compared with a year earlier. At the same time, exports to Southeast Asian countries “surged by 21 percent,” highlighting a rapid shift in trade routes. Inside China, imports fell as domestic demand weakened. These numbers offer a peek into how both sides are scrambling to reroute trade flows, and suggest that the ripple effects of rising tariffs are just beginning to take hold. Thanks for listening.
