Welcome to today’s episode! In education news, Ravenscroft, a private school in Raleigh, has announced a ban on cellphones for grades 10 through 12, effective next school year. All students will be required to secure their phones in a locked pouch at the beginning of the day, a policy already in place for the lower and middle school grades.
A school spokesperson shared, “We are very optimistic about implementing the cellphone-free school day in our Upper School and know that it is critical for the healthy social, emotional, and intellectual development of students.” Parents, like Sukonya Gogoi, have responded positively, emphasizing that school is about building interpersonal skills and friendships, stating, “I think cellphones are nothing but a deterrent for that.”
This discussion around cellphone use is not just local; it’s happening nationwide. In Wake County, for instance, school board officials are contemplating a district-wide policy to limit cellphone use, with parents expressing concerns about their ability to contact their children in emergencies. To address this, exceptions will be included for emergency communications.
As this issue develops, North Carolina lawmakers are also considering bills to restrict cellphone use in schools, but none have reached the governor’s desk yet. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving topic!
