Navigating the Tensions: Apple's Global Production Strategy Under Trump’s Pressure

Welcome to Tech Today. In Qatar this week, President Donald Trump publicly urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to halt plans for expanding iPhone manufacturing in India. “I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday,” Trump said. “You’re coming in with $500 billion, but now I hear you’re building all over India… We’re not interested in you building in India.”

Trump claimed this conversation means Apple will be “upping their production” in the US, pointing to the company’s promise to invest $500 billion domestically over the next four years. But industry analysts warn that large-scale iPhone assembly simply can’t shift back to the States overnight—there’s a shortage of labor, suppliers, and manufacturing facilities.

In fact, Apple has steadily boosted output in India amid ongoing US-China tensions. According to the Financial Times, by the end of 2026, every iPhone sold in the US could be sourced from Indian factories. With political pressure on one side and supply-chain realities on the other, Apple’s global production strategy faces a complex balancing act.
