A recent report from the National Employment Law Project highlights that nearly one in five surveyed workers found unemployment benefits “not adequate to meet their financial needs.” The report shows that the effectiveness of these benefits varies significantly by state, with wage replacement ranging from just 29% in Alabama to 49% in Washington.

But it’s not just the benefit amounts that are problematic; the system itself is fraught with inefficiencies. Many workers report facing tech issues, delayed payments, or outright denials—where the share of incorrectly denied applicants nearly doubled after the pandemic.

Interestingly, employer involvement also plays a critical role: nearly a third of workers mentioned that their employer influenced their approach to benefits. However, 19% felt discouraged from applying for unemployment benefits by their own employers. In contrast, employees in supportive states like New Jersey received more encouragement to seek help.
