Welcome to today’s podcast, where we explore the unique journey of singer-songwriter Neko Case. Recently nominated for three Grammy awards, Case's deep connection to cars began in childhood, where she sought freedom amid challenging circumstances. “That feeling of being in charge of where you're going, and you're in your own little universe, was something really huge to me,” she shared.
Neko's love for vehicles grew as she taught herself to drive with a $350 1964 Ford Falcon, asserting, “Whether or not I have a vagina should not matter if I'm working on a car.” This passion led her through various classic cars, but it was her beloved 1988 GMC Rally STX, affectionately known as "The Beaver," that truly captured her heart.
Though she no longer embraces #vanlife due to impractical snowy conditions in Vermont, her affinity for vehicles remains. As she puts it, “I do have van envy,” reminiscing about “the van that could make mine and other people's dreams come true.”
With a mix of nostalgia and current dilemmas, Neko's automotive journey is a reflection of her enduring spirit. As she wraps up our conversation, she expresses her love for cars and humorously adds, “And tell GMC I got a bone to pick with them.” Stay tuned for more stories from the road!
