Welcome to today's episode, where we dive into the latest developments at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, or RDU. As the airport gears up for significant expansion, they’re investing millions in maintaining their critical infrastructure, particularly the longest runway, known as 5L/23R.
Recently, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority approved a $7 million preservation contract, the sixth of its kind, aimed at extending the life of this vital runway until a new one can be constructed. Chief Development Officer Bill Sandifer highlighted that RDU is spending about $7 million annually on upkeep, adding up to $30 million since 2019.
Airport CEO Michael Landguth emphasized the importance of the runway, stating, "Without that runway, your transatlantic service is lost, your West Coast service is lost." The new runway, set to cost over $1 billion, will enhance RDU's capacity and is part of a larger $2.5 billion capital plan, which encompasses terminal expansions and other major improvements.
With international passenger traffic surging by 50% in early 2025, RDU is strategically positioning itself for growth, ready to welcome even more travelers to and from global destinations.
