Rediscovering Authenticity in a Sea of Digital Noise

Welcome to “Culture Unfiltered.” Today we’re tackling a question: If nothing is curated, how do we find things? Recently, social media has “scattered the information like bread being fed to ducks,” forcing us to hunt through endless posts and arguments—like fans debating whether Björk’s new concert film, Cornucopia, includes a documentary. Back in the day, you discovered Aphex Twin or Run, Lola, Run through a single college radio show or a weekly MTV program. Now algorithms trap you in a “sludge pile,” serving up only what you’ve already seen. As the author warns, “criticism is dead,” and sites like Pitchfork churn out dozens of articles a day, leaving us overwhelmed. So what’s the fix? Some of us are retreating—jotting down discoveries in Obsidian and trusting our own lists over algorithmic suggestions. It may feel like a job, but with enough persistence, “search long enough and eventually you will find what you’re looking for.”
