Reimagining E-commerce: Shopify's Vision for a Futuristic User Experience

Welcome to E-commerce Evolution, I’m your host. Today we explore Shopify’s bold vision for a sci-fi–inspired user experience. Carl Rivera, Shopify’s new chief design officer, invites us to “imagine an interface where you can quickly shift between talking, typing, clicking, and even drawing to instruct software, like moving around a whiteboard in a dynamic conversation.” He describes a blank canvas powered by AI that knows everything about online and brick-and-mortar retail, automates tasks, and recommends actions like the most brilliant partner you could dream of. Rivera joined Shopify through the 2018 acquisition of his startup, TicTail, and now leads design at a time when many doubt design’s place in AI. “We’re entering a new technological paradigm with AI,” he says, and Shopify takes the opposite view of critics who say design is dead. The company aims to reimagine its platform to be more intuitive, to save time, and to empower businesses of every size. That’s the future of UX at Shopify.
