Welcome back to the podcast! Today we're shining a light on Dayne Coates, a high school basketball star from Berne-Knox-Westerlo, New York, who's taken social media by storm with his unique shot. Dayne's unorthodox jump shot has gone viral, amassing over 25 million views. “It's pretty wild,” he said. “I never would've imagined this kind of attention.” Diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at just three years old, Dayne's journey has been one of resilience.
Experts are unsure if his shooting style stems from a tic or OCD, but one thing’s clear: this 6-foot-2 point guard is a force on the court, averaging 18 points per game and helping his team go undefeated. "He's just a special player," says his coach, Andy Wright. Despite his struggles, Dayne’s determination shines through. He leaned on prayer and his support system when his confidence wavered, stating, "The confidence they had in me gave me this new confidence in myself."
Interestingly, while basketball is where he excels, Dayne’s true passion lies in football. “I'm so much better in football,” he admits, and he dreams of walking on at Albany. As he prepares for his return to the sport, Dayne embodies the spirit of persistence, inspiring many along the way. As his father Ryan confidently states, “'Because he said he would,'” is all anyone needs to know about Dayne's future. Stay tuned for more stories of resilience and triumph!
