Welcome to Tech Insights! Today, we're diving into an exciting development in semiconductor manufacturing. Legendary Intel CTO and CEO Pat Gelsinger is now the executive chairman at xLight, a startup innovating in free electron laser technology.
Gelsinger announced on LinkedIn, “I will be working closely with Nicholas Kelez and team to build the world’s most powerful Free Electron Lasers by leveraging particle accelerator technology.” This groundbreaking approach aims to enhance extreme ultraviolet lithography systems by generating a light source using particle accelerators.
xLight claims that by 2028, they will produce a laser produced plasma source that’s over 1,000W, significantly advancing current capabilities. Gelsinger notes that this innovation could cut per-wafer costs by around 50% and reduce capital and operating expenses by threefold.
Crucially, xLight aims not to replace ASML's existing tools but to create technology compatible with them, potentially revolutionizing manufacturing efficiency. This leap is not just limited to semiconductors; it could also address various sectors, from national security to biotech challenges.
Stay tuned as we follow this story and its implications for the tech industry!
