Startup Wisdom from Jessica Livingston: A Guide to Reinvention and Resilience

Hello and welcome to a special edition of Founders at Work. I’m your host. Today we’re distilling Jessica Livingston’s firehose of startup wisdom. Thirty-two years ago she sat where you are now—degree in hand and no plan. She realized “the subway stops here”—college never mapped your career. So she learned to reinvent herself, to “just decide to be more curious or more responsible,” and no one can stop you. Next, she recommends a simple trick to navigate thousands of jobs or ideas: talk to people. Find interesting folks, ask about their work, and if the fit’s off, get out. Then steel yourself against rejection—no matter how many no’s, keep going. When you have a bold idea, “think different. Think users.” Solve a problem you feel, talk to those you serve, and measure success in real feedback, even “ramen profitable” revenue. Focus, say no to distractions, and build something people want. That’s your launchpad. Good luck!
