Hello and welcome to Today’s Brief. The Supreme Court has just sided with the Trump administration, granting an emergency stay that pauses the Biden-era CHNV humanitarian parole program. This program had offered temporary legal entry for people fleeing Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. Now, more than 500,000 men, women and children risk losing their status—and facing deportation—while their appeals play out. President Trump, echoing his executive order, said “One of my most important obligations is to protect the American people from the disastrous effects of unlawful mass migration and resettlement.” In dissent, Justices Jackson and Sotomayor warned that “the Court has plainly botched this assessment today,” and that it “undervalues the devastating consequences of allowing the Government to precipitously upend the lives and livelihoods of nearly half a million noncitizens.” Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding legal battle.
