Welcome back to Mac Minute. Today we’re diving into how Cultured Code rebuilt its Things 3 cloud system using Apple’s Swift language. According to the company, the transition “occurred seamlessly and without any disruption to users.” Under the hood, Things Cloud now runs on a Swift-based backend instead of the decade-old Python 2 and Google App Engine setup.
Although your to-do lists look and behave the same across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro, the new infrastructure has been live in production for over a year. Engineers first ran both systems in parallel, validating the Swift version under real-world traffic before switching everyone over in early 2024. The results speak for themselves: a threefold reduction in compute costs, plus a fourfold increase in sync request processing speed.
Swift may have launched in 2014 for iOS and macOS, but Cultured Code’s successful server rollout shows its growing power in the cloud. That’s the latest from MacRumors—thanks for listening, and stay synced!
