The Evolution of the NFL Draft Chime: A Soundtrack to Anticipation

Welcome to today’s podcast! Have you ever wondered where ESPN's iconic NFL Draft chime comes from? Well, it all began in 2005 when composer Bob Christianson was tasked with creating a sound that would signal a new selection to viewers. He aimed for something “bell-like” and “subliminal,” noting, “It cuts through, but it doesn’t have to be loud and in your face.” This chime is now synonymous with anticipation during the Draft.

The idea came from a desire to better engage viewers as the picks quickened in the later rounds. ESPN’s creative music director, Kevin Wilson, compared the chime to a stock market bell, emphasizing that music plays a crucial role in setting a program's tone. The first version debuted during the 2004 Draft, but it wasn't until 2009 that it was reliably used for the first pick, forever changing how fans experience the event.

As former ESPN producer Ed Placey noted, “You get conditioned to knowing that’s what it means.” This simple chime has become a staple that signifies new beginnings for players, families, and fans alike—making it an essential part of the NFL Draft. Christianson humorously remarked on its success, saying, “It makes me feel like I didn’t pick the wrong thing to do for a living.” As we gear up for the 2025 NFL Draft, expect that familiar sound to prompt excitement and engagement for fans everywhere!
