Hello and welcome to Console Corner. With the Nintendo Switch 2 launching this week, excitement is through the roof—but the future remains uncertain. Pre-orders sold out in hours, driven by eager enthusiasts. As video game analyst Mat Piscatella reminds us, “Sales around the launch period are more reflection of available supply than anything.” Beyond that frenzy, Nintendo must convince the broader audience—the families and casual gamers—to open their wallets. Rising living costs, looming tariffs, and a crowded market aren’t making that task any easier.
Industry vet Keza MacDonald warns that a games console is “an unaffordable luxury, especially for families,” and many casual players say they haven’t even heard about the Switch 2 yet. At launch, Nintendo’s relying on incremental upgrades rather than a killer new feature, and some buyers are already eyeing alternatives like the Steam Deck. Still, as GameFile author Stephen Totilo puts it, “Simply because of the logo on the box, it’s safe to say that the Switch 2 is too Nintendo to fail… at least in the early going.”
