Thriving in the Twilight of Remote Work Insights from Brendan Gregg's Extreme Schedule

Welcome to Remote Work Minute. Today we’re diving into Brendan Gregg’s three years of “extremely remote work.” Based in Australia for a US firm, Brendan has attended 77 meetings that began between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m.—that’s “roughly once every two weeks”—followed by his usual 7 a.m. start Monday through Saturday.

He isn’t complaining, but he does log every out-of-hours call. As he puts it, “I’ve had 76 meetings between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., if you need to add another, that’s ok, it’ll be my 77th.” His top tips? Count and share those meetings, never complain about the hours, and keep a daily accomplishments log.

Brendan’s home office includes a Samson Meteor mic and a Logitech BRIO on a suspension boom—because clear sound and video are essential when you’re always on camera. He also warns that odd hours can leave you with an upset stomach for days, though he’s still taking fewer sick days than before.

His parting advice: remote work isn’t a problem—it’s an opportunity, if you track your time, communicate clearly, and give remote staff the chances they deserve.
