In North Carolina, a significant shift in high school education is underway as a bill has passed through a House committee to replace Math 3 with computer science. House Bill 415 aims to align the curriculum with real-world job requirements, as many students struggle to pass Math 3. According to Rep. David Willis, one of the bill's sponsors, "Our bill is to give kids what they actually need."

The proposed changes also include adjustments to the UNC System's admissions requirements. Critics, like Rep. Julie von Haefen, argue that this move could lower academic standards for North Carolina students, stating, "We are requiring the UNC System to lower its standards." However, Willis counters this concern, insisting that the bill is about becoming "more realistic about the world we're living in."

While the bill removes the mandate for Math 3, students will still need to complete Math 1, Math 2, and another math class that aligns with their future plans. Additionally, a U.S. history test will be required for graduation, underscoring the evolving nature of educational requirements in the state. Stay tuned as this bill progresses through the legislative process.
