Welcome to Today’s Brief. When it comes to education, President Trump is following in the footsteps of Governor Ron DeSantis’s Florida. From parental opt-outs to aggressive voucher programs, the Trump administration has adopted policies first tested in the Sunshine State. Schools and colleges face new rules on diversity programs and a “patriotic” curriculum, just as Florida families have for years. As Trump spokesman Harrison Fields put it, “Many states, including Florida, are leading in this area, and they now have a partner in the Oval Office who prioritizes parents’ fundamental role in choosing what’s best for their children.” DeSantis reshaped K–12 and higher education by banning race and gender lessons, offering universal education savings accounts, and remaking New College of Florida. Now, Trump aims to do the same nationwide, though he faces legal and constitutional limits on federal control of local schools. The Supreme Court may soon decide whether parents nationwide can opt their kids out of lessons on religious grounds, a policy first seen in Florida. That’s Today’s Brief.
