Hello and welcome to Tech Tidbits. Today, we’re talking mini PCs—and they’re surprisingly powerful. Over the last week, I’ve been working on the Minisforum UM870, a “tiny mini PC” powered by an 8-core, 16-thread AMD 8745H. At just $343 barebones—and under $550 fully loaded with 48 gigs of RAM and a terabyte of storage—I’m shocked to report “I really don’t need more than this!”
In our benchmarks, the UM870 “runs our full HEY test suite in just 2m28s,” beating a 14-core M4 Pro Mac Mini that clocks in at 2m49s—and costs over four times as much. And yes, it even handles games like Fortnite, Cyberpunk 2077, and Forza Horizon at 1080p medium settings.
Thanks to Zen 4 on a 5nm process, single-core scores rival Apple’s chips, while Linux and Docker workloads give AMD an edge. Mini PCs have truly gotten really good—tiny, silent, and powerful. That’s Tech Tidbits—see you next time!
