Welcome to the show! Today, we're diving into the innovative world of data storage with a focus on Cerabyte, a startup that’s making waves in the archival space. They’ve recently shared a remarkable video showcasing their durability tests for glass storage media. Picture this: they boiled a sliver of their archival glass in salt water at a scorching 100 degrees Celsius, then grilled it in a pizza oven at 250 degrees. What’s the outcome? The data remained “100% intact.”
Founded in 2022 in Germany, Cerabyte is on a mission to revolutionize data storage, claiming their medium can last up to 5,000 years. This technology utilizes a ceramic-on-glass material, where data is imprinted using femtosecond laser technology. These glass chips can store a gigabyte of data and are surprisingly resilient to the elements.
While they’ve proven their media can withstand extreme heat and corrosion, questions remain about impact resistance. Nevertheless, Cerabyte continues to push the boundaries and aims to make storage costs drop below $1 per terabyte by 2030.
Stay tuned for more updates from Cerabyte and other tech innovators as we keep you informed on the latest in data storage. Don't forget to follow us for more insights!
