Hello and welcome to Privacy Pulse—your one minute dive into digital privacy. Today we’re breaking down why privacy advocates swear by Apple TV boxes. Whenever smart TVs ratchet up tracking, the advice is always: "Just disconnect your TV from the Internet and use an Apple TV box." From the moment you set it up, Siri, location tracking, and analytics are off by default, and apps running tvOS 14.5 or later must explicitly ask permission before they can track you. As Apple puts it, "If you choose Ask App Not to Track, the app developer can’t access the system advertising identifier." Even if you share analytics, Apple applies differential privacy to anonymize any data. You can disable personalized recommendations and location-based ads in settings, or go so far as to use a separate Apple account for your Apple TV. Voice commands still send transcripts to Apple for processing—stored up to six months under a random ID, and removed after two years—but audio isn’t kept. While Apple could one day add automatic content recognition, for now Apple TV remains the most private streaming hardware on the market. That’s Privacy Pulse. Until next time, stay private.
