I’m your host with today’s tech update. A landmark court ruling is shaking up the iPhone App Store. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers has ordered Apple to let apps offer promotions and collect payments directly, bypassing its 30 percent fee. Now, the Kindle app sports a “Get Book” button that sends you to its website to buy books, Spotify can offer a three-month free trial right in its app, and Patreon is letting fans support creators with bigger tips. Apple rakes in about eleven billion dollars a year in U.S. app sales, with roughly two billion now at risk. But consumers might stick with Apple’s seamless experience and trusted billing. And regulators in Europe, Japan and South Korea are already eyeing similar changes. Apple says it will appeal, though Stanford law professor Mark Lemley advises they “should take their licks and let it be.” Stay tuned—this could rewrite how we shop on our phones.
