Welcome back to the Home Gym Minute. If you’ve ever liked the idea of adjustable dumbbells but worried about your gains outpacing their limits, you’re not alone. A full set from five to 60 pounds can cost over fifteen-hundred dollars and gobble up your space, which is why REP QuickDraws and similar models are so popular. But once you hit that 60-pound ceiling, what then? Some Reddit users have asked, “What’s stopping me from adding more plates?”
Technically, you can slide extra plates onto QuickDraw handles and lock them in place, but REP warns that “internal testing was not conducted beyond the 60 pound maximum,” and doing so will void your warranty. You’ll lose the quick-change convenience, need to track weight manually, and risk a bulky, awkward setup that could fail mid-lift.
As my partner and I climbed from 65 to 85 pounds, the dumbbells looked increasingly precarious—and the all-steel build felt like it might snap. Remember, just because something is possible doesn’t mean you should make a habit of it. If you’re serious about heavy lifting, a higher-capacity adjustable or dedicated heavy dumbbells are a safer, more practical choice.
