Welcome to today’s episode! We’re diving into the inspiring story of Daughters Coffee & Books, a new bookstore that’s recently opened in Durham, North Carolina. Founded by Nicole Grinnell, a former property manager, the shop combines the comforts of coffee with the joys of literature.
Nicole opened her store on April 12 with a collection of 2,000 books, comprised mostly of used titles. She wanted to create a space for the community, especially since she noted, “there's no easily accessible coffee shop… no independent book shops close by.” Her vision was not just about selling books but also providing a cozy atmosphere for families and book lovers alike.
What makes this bookstore unique is its dual focus. Grinnell says, “I really thought the coffee would be the thing that pulls people in the door, and then they would hang around longer for the books.” And so far, it’s working—books account for 40 percent of her revenue, while coffee and snacks make up the other 60 percent.
Plus, she’s committed to community engagement by accepting donated books and planning events for local authors and readers. This vibrant addition is not just for bookworms but for anyone looking to relax with a good cup of coffee.
So if you’re in the area, stop by Daughters Coffee & Books. It’s not just a store; it’s a gathering place for creativity and connection.
