Welcome to today’s episode! We’re diving into a key finding that may change your evening routine. A recent study involving over 14,000 participants has found that intense workouts before bed might be doing more harm than good for your sleep. Researchers discovered that exercising within four hours of sleeping may lead to longer time taken to fall asleep, poorer sleep quality, and a higher resting heart rate.
Josh Leota from Monash University explained, “Intense exercise in the evening can keep the body in a heightened state of alertness,” suggesting why public health guidelines caution against late-night workouts. While some smaller studies claimed late exercise might not affect sleep, they lacked broader data to support their findings.
Elise Facer-Childs, another author of the study, emphasized, “Evening exercise—particularly involving high levels of cardiovascular strain—may disrupt subsequent sleep.” The researchers suggest opting for low-intensity exercises like light jogging or swimming if you need to workout close to bedtime.
So, if good sleep is your goal, consider re-evaluating your workout schedule. It could make all the difference. Thanks for tuning in!
