Today we’re exploring Modelo’s new nonalcoholic beer—and its logo, hailed as possibly the best of the year. With nonalcoholic beer sales booming by double digits, Modelo tapped Gut Design to create Model0% Dorada and Model0% Negra. Some brands have tweaked existing marks, but this logo feels pure design serendipity. “You cannot unsee that, right?” says Murilo Melo, Gut’s global head of design. He recalls seeing “Model0%” in a WhatsApp chat and thinking, “It was kind of a magic moment.”
The new label uses the iconic “o” from Modelo’s century-old logo, drops the banners and lions, and focuses on a bold, scalable mark. “Everybody was so on board to respect the visual legacy of the beer, and open to something new,” Melo adds. That instant green light proves great design rarely needs debate. As Melo laughs, “Less than I would like it to.” Cheers to Model0%, proof that simplicity can be genius.
