The Protein Paradox: Navigating Needs, Costs, and Choices for a Healthier Plate

Hello and welcome. The Economist recently declared, “Fats and carbohydrates, eat your hearts out—protein is the macronutrient of the moment.” Rich people love the stuff. They treat it like “ambrosia.” Are they onto something? A recent article explores how much protein we really need. Official guidelines recommend about 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, barely enough for most adults. Yet studies suggest certain groups—athletes, older adults and pregnant women—benefit from up to 1.2 grams. Above that, extra protein offers little boost and may strain kidneys. Pricey animal proteins hog the spotlight, but plant sources like beans and lentils can deliver all essential amino acids if combined smartly. Environmental costs also matter: beef generates far more greenhouse gases than peas. So next time you reach for a steak, consider your true needs. Thanks for listening. I’m your host, and I’ll catch you next time.
