Hello and welcome to The Digital Minute. Today we explore Denmark’s bold steps toward digital sovereignty. Last month, the ICC’s chief prosecutor was cut off from crucial services under U.S. sanction power, proving any American administration can disconnect European access to Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure. Despite assurances that fears of being cut off were “fear, doubt, and uncertainty,” reality won.
Now Copenhagen and Aarhus counties—together employing over forty thousand people—plan to eliminate Microsoft 365, Teams, and Azure. As the Copenhagen committee chairman told Danish media, “If, theoretically, the relationship to the US gets worse, we could fear that Microsoft would be forced to shut everything down.” Critics call the quest “utopian,” arguing it would take at least a decade and should have started fifteen years ago.
But digital sovereignty can’t wait. Europe must reduce reliance on U.S. tech to protect its citizens and futures. It may be hard, but as Nelson Mandela said, “it always seems impossible until it’s done.” That’s the Digital Minute—thanks for listening.
