Welcome to today’s podcast. We have some important news regarding international shipping that could impact many customers in the U.S. Starting Monday, DHL will suspend high-value shipments to the United States due to new customs regulations. According to The Wall Street Journal, U.S. Customs has lowered the import threshold for rigorous processing from $2,500 to $800. This means any goods above that value will now face additional scrutiny.
DHL, a division of Deutsche Post, stated that a “surge in formal customs clearances” may cause delays and has temporarily suspended shipments to individuals in the U.S. valued over $800. Business-to-business shipments won’t be suspended, but they may also experience delays. It’s worth noting that items valued under $800 will still be shipped without any interruptions.
This decision aligns with recent disruptions driven by the U.S.'s trade policies under President Trump, who announced tariffs as high as 145% on Chinese imports. In fact, Hong Kong’s postal service has also halted shipments to the U.S., citing unreasonable tariffs.
As Fed Chair Jerome Powell noted, “the level of the tariff increases announced so far is significantly larger than anticipated,” and the economic effects could lead to higher inflation and slower growth. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing situation.
