Today, we’re discussing the recent announcement that The Progressive School, co-founded by Priscilla Chan, will be closing after the 2025-2026 academic year. This tuition-free private school, established to serve disadvantaged communities in the San Francisco Bay Area, has been operational for ten years. The school did not provide specific reasons for its closure but emphasized its commitment to a “thoughtful and supportive transition” for students and families.
In an April 17 statement, The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative revealed plans to invest $50 million over the next five years in the communities the school has supported. The Progressive School focused on integrating education, health care, and family support for over 300 primarily Latino and Black families since its founding in 2016. Educator Meredith Liu, who collaborated with Chan on this project, sadly passed away in 2023.
The school’s dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion stands in contrast to Zuckerberg's recent moves to end corresponding programs at Meta. As part of its transition plan, CZI will also invest in education savings plans for all students, helping families navigate their next steps.
