Hello and welcome to “The Road Ahead.” Today we’re talking about the push to bring more driverless cars into our lives. Right now, Google-owned Waymo operates self-driving taxis in four cities—Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin. By this winter, they plan to expand into a dozen more. Meanwhile, Tesla and Amazon have hit delays with their own robo-taxi services.
But success on the road means winning public trust. As CBS correspondent David Pogue reminds us, many people still hesitate when it comes to “stepping into an autonomous vehicle.” To avoid any embarrassing “bumbles,” Waymo has logged millions of real-world miles and built a virtual testing fleet that drives the equivalent of hundreds of years every day.
Their strategy is simple: make safety the foundation, not an afterthought. From remote operators standing by to 360-degree lidar sensors, every detail is designed to reassure passengers. It’s a cautious, measured journey—but if building trust one ride at a time works, we may soon find ourselves summoning a driverless car the same way we order a pizza.
