That’s the dream behind Coco-Fro, a new Durham startup founded by entrepreneur Pierce Freelon. Inspired by his “childhood fascination with space ice cream,” Freelon set out to give the classic astronaut treat a healthy, planet-friendly twist.

Using coconut milk instead of dairy, Coco-Fro’s freeze-drying process “preserves flavor while creating that cosmic crunch,” he says. Flavors like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry launch straight from the lab into resealable pouches, ready for earthbound adventures or everyday snacking.

After raising initial funding and testing at local markets, Coco-Fro is gearing up for direct-to-door shipping across the U.S. So if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to eat ice cream like an astronaut—minus the plastic wrapper—your taste buds might be next in line for liftoff.
